This is the story about our VW Golf mk2 8V GTI which we build with minimal investment.
Spec of the Car:
1991 Vw Golf Gti, 5doors and 8 Valve PB engine (112hp)
Let’s start at the beginning of 2015 when we bought him for around 200bucks.The GTI was in a horrible condition, he lived a life for around 25years on the salty streets of the Italian mountains, in several hands-off young self-proclaimed racers…

We decided to give him a second chance and bring him back on the streets.
The car was very rusty and has been tampered by many previous owners.
We started first with hours of cutting rusty metal, welding, and finally complete disasembling to be ready for a DIY paintjob.
Because of our low budget we had to paint the golf by ourself. Total cost were arround 400$ and endless hours.

After a half-year off hard work, we were ready for the first drive, and a trip to the famous Wörthersee Treffen in Austria.

Here we made a trip to the legendary Timmelsjoch (Italy)

Mindset change: from tuning to a cheap racing experience
After years of celebrating the tuning and VAG scene, we decided to focus on an old dream: Entering motorsports.
So to accomplish this dream it was time to make some changes. And over the last 3 years we changed a lot of parts on the Golf:
Step 1, Performance & Driveability:
- New Camshafts and complete engine rebuild

- Added a stainless steel manifold with a complete custom build 60mm direct exhaust with two silencers

- Changed the Digifant II ECU: Increased the rev limiter RPM, changed all the fuel maps, changed ignition timing

- Installed a wot box for flatshift and launch control.

- To be in an ideal rpm range during driving it’s necessary to have the right gear reduction in the gearbox. So we found out that the FM 020 Gearbox from a Golf1 was the best solution to go for us. But it required a lot of modification and fabrication work to fit it into the mk2.

- Modified the gear change mechanism with Unibal bearings for short travel shifting and better flatshift (spark cut) functionality. Now it runs way smoother.
Step 2, Driving dynamics:
- Added Polyurethane Bushings, to the front and rear Suspension components of the car.
- Upgrade to better brakes: ATE Power Discs at the front and rear pads.

- Changed the rim and tire combination to Racing mode: From now on we will run small BBS rims & Toyo Proxxes R888R 195/50R15 Semislicks on the car.

- Bought an old rusty Bilstein B16 Coilover kit and had to restore it. NTP Italy Bilstein added a harder setup and Unibal mounting points, we completely assembled and installed it.

- Installed Unibal Camber plates at the front to change the Camber.
First smell of Track air
First Trackday ever for me and the car at Franciacorta (Italy):

It was a very cool first trip to the racetrack and the way back home which we did with the old Golf by himself. Fortunately, everything went without failure so we came back home after 6h of driving. I want to say a big thanks to all my friends who helped us at the track.
The second Trackday we had was at Cremona Circuit (Italy), and also this time we drove the Golf to the track. We had a fun experience on the Racetrack while driving between GT3 and TCR Cup Cars.

First Racefeeling:
We had our first slalom race at the local Autoslalom event organized by Racing Team Meran in Val Passiria (Italy)

It was a cool and funny day we can`t wait to race again !
